Sustainability Action Plan

This year's Sustainability action plan includes:

  • growing a sustainability-focused community at GCU through easy-to-access activities such as community litter picks and nature walks
  • campaigns focused on waste reduction specifically around fast fashion and food waste
  • encouraging and supporting students to start societies focused on the common good ethos including ones that have sustainability, social justice or charity work at their heart

Green Impact Accredited Student Union

We have been awarded Excellent status five years in a row (2019/20; 2020/21; 2021/22; 2022/2023; 2023/24) in the Green Impact accreditation programme highlighting our work on sustainability.

Here is what the assessors said:

Some exciting news, the results are in and I am delighted to announce that Glasgow Caledonian University Students' Association has achieved an Excellent Green Impact Students’ Union award

Congratulations and thank you for demonstrating leadership on embedding sustainability and social justice across your campus, the curriculum, and wider society.

Your auditor said- GCU SA has some a really fantastic job this year of making their sustainability work student-led, collaborative and impactful. I was really impressed by how involved the E&E officers were, and how there were offshoots of activity happening all across the union, their enthusiasm must be infectious! The numerous projects linking sustainability with the community and social justice issues evidenced how deeply the union connects and understands the topics. Great work!

GCU Students' Association has been previously awarded Gold at the NUS Green Impact Awards for our work in ethical and environmental issues. In 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19 we achieved the "Very Good" criteria. We are currently working towards achieving NUS Green Impact accreditation for the current academic year (2024/25).

All students at Glasgow Caledonian University are automatically members of GCU Students' Association.
This membership is free for current GCU students.
