What is the Fit to Sit Policy?

Under the GCU Fit to Sit Policy, there is a "default assumption" that if you undertake and submit a piece of coursework, assessed presentation or exam, you are declaring that you are fit to do so and wish it to be marked and counted as an attempt.

If my assessment is affected by personal or medical issues
  • Contact your module leader/s (or programme leader) before the deadline to request an extension if needed.
  • You may need to provide evidence to support your request.
  • This will allow you more time while still submitting in the same trimester.
If I need to defer my assessment
  • Submit a Fit to Sit application 5 days before or up to 2 days after each affected assessment or exam date to declare you were NOT Fit to Sit.
  • Each Fit to Sit form applies to a single assessment (coursework or exam).
  • If multiple assessments are affected, complete separate forms for each.
  • Each module component allows one Fit to Sit declaration to preserve your attempt.
If serious issues continue

You may be eligible for an Extreme and Exceptional Extenuating Circumstances (EEEC) application to preserve a further attempt.

How and when do I apply?

If you are not fit to complete an assessment, you can apply using the online Fit to Sit form to inform the University and keep your attempt for the next diet.

Complete the form:

  • In the 5 days BEFORE your deadline or exam date, or
  • Within 2 days AFTER your submission/exam if you decide you do not want it marked or counted.

These are consecutive days and include weekends and public holidays.

Important Points to Note

  • If you do not declare you were unfit within 2 days of submission, your attempt and mark will stand.
  • Some modules have exceptions — check your module handbook.
  • Submit a separate Fit to Sit form for each impacted assessment.
  • Applications are not automatically transferred across modules.
  • If applying before the deadline, you may include an impact statement (optional).
  • If applying after submission, you must explain your reason for doing so.
  • Ensure you include accurate assessment details (module codes, deadlines, and module leader email) — incorrect information may result in rejection.
  • You must log in with your GCU credentials to access the form.
