Work-based experiences

Your career development matters to us and we deliver.

Being a Full Time Officer, I have been asked so many questions by students about how the opportunities on offer from the Students’ Association can add to their work experience. This startles me a lot because most students are yet to discover the opportunities they are exposed to, valuable to their employability.

At the Students’ Association there is always lots happening, providing plenty of valuable opportunities and experiences. Examples include: standing to be a Full time Officer, Academic Representative or Liberation Officer; getting involved in our societies and sports clubs or councils; attending committee meetings; volunteering with our media groups Radio Caley and the EDIT, campaigns and much more.

At the Students’ Association we work in collaboration with the Careers Service to organise and promote events beneficial to students in terms of CV and interview support, empowerment and leadership.  Continuous professional development is possible through the Student Leaders Program in Trimesters A and B, helping students develop skills and competence to explore better careers.

To top things, Internationalising the University curriculum was one of our big successes organised by the VPSHLS, where we worked with the University to integrate intercultural skills workshops into five modules for year-one students across campus. This will help build diversity competence for students as employers yearn for employees with diversity understanding.

My final words for students is for you all to explore and tap into the opportunities at the Students’ Association. It is not about having that degree, but about having the extraordinary experience that makes you outstanding in the career market.

Thanks and stay positive.
