I want to raise an idea/petition around attendance systems at GCU. At the moment, a student can record their attendance by swiping their identity card on the card scanning systems within the classroom. This is really good, however the system has its flaws. If a student forgets their identity card, they will then be unable to record their attendance and will be marked absent, despite being in class. Lecturers do not have the ability/capacity to access the systems and record the students attendance as the only way to do this is by swiping a students identity card on the card-scanning system.
I want to raise an idea/petition that GCU reviews this system and finds a way of allowing lecturers to be able to access the attendance register system so they can record a students attendance if they have indeed attended the lesson but have forgotten their identity card so GCU has accurate systems and are not penalised. An example of being penalised involves a student being sent an attendance reminder/warning which then involves that student contacting their lecturer to advise they have received such a reminder/warning and then the lecturer needs to take time to respond to the e-mail advising them not to be concerned. This then adds pressure to the lecturers workload along with distress to the student and the system is currently flawed and the system needs to be reviewed to ensure GCU attendance registers remain accurate, to prevent distress to the student and to give lecturers more powers to be able to record students attendance retrospectively or in class through their computer.
