Being well equiped and having the right clothing can really make or break your day on the mountain and in some cases can be life saving if conditions take a turn for the worst, but even in more desirable conditions it can be the difference between having a good or bad day, especially with how changeable the conditions can be in the Highlands. It should be noted that we are not dictated by the months when it comes to defining whether it is a summer or winter hike, it is defined by both the conditions underfoot and overhead.
In particular with club hikes in summer conditions it is essential that you have a minimum of: boots (with ankle support), rucksack, food, hooded waterproof jacket, hiking trousers (no jeans or cotton), moisture-wicking base layer, waterproof over-trousers, midlayer, headtorch.
Below is a reccommended kit list from Mountaineering Scotland, detailing essential items for summer hiking in the Scottish mountains, especially if you are solo hiking as on most club trips those in charge will carry first aid kits, maps, emergency kit etc. although it is always useful to have your own.
