GCU Computing Society

Learn more. Build more. Meet the people doing it.

GCU Computing Society is for students who want to make the most of their time at university.

We bring together students from across computing to learn new skills, work on real projects, meet people in industry, and access opportunities that do not always fit neatly inside a module.

You do not need to be an expert. You need an interest in computing and a willingness to get involved.

What we are working on

 

Hackathons

We are currently developing a new hackathon programme that allows students to work in teams, tackle real problems, and build something from scratch.

The aim is to create more opportunities to challenge yourself outside coursework, experiment with new technologies, and collaborate with students from different areas of computing.

 

A dedicated Tech Careers Fair

We are in discussions with the University and GCU’s Careers & Employment team about creating a dedicated Computing and Technology Careers Fair.

Rather than including computing students only within a much wider general careers event, we want to build something shaped around the needs of computing students and the employers who want to meet them.

The Society is helping ensure that students have a direct voice in how the event develops.

 

Real development work

We are beginning to bring paid development contracts and external project work into the Society.

These projects allow students to gain experience beyond coursework by working to real requirements, with real clients, and alongside other students as part of a development team.

For many members, this could become their first piece of genuine industry-style experience, something meaningful to add to a CV or portfolio.

Learn beyond your course.

We run practical, in-depth workshops exploring tools, technologies, and areas of computing that students may only encounter briefly—or not at all—during their course.

Sessions may cover:

• Software development

• Artificial intelligence

• Data and analytics

• Cybersecurity

• Cloud and infrastructure

• Development tools and workflows

• Emerging technologies

• Industry practices and employability

• Git, Versioning, and CI/CD

Some workshops will be student-led, while others will feature people working directly in industry.

Hear from people who have done it

We will run Q&A sessions with students who have completed internships and placements, alongside recent graduates who have moved into industry.

These sessions focus on the questions students genuinely want answered:

• What was the interview process like?

• How difficult was the technical assessment?

• What did you actually do during your internship?

• What helped you secure the role?

• What would you do differently?

• What should students start learning now?

The goal is to give members a more realistic picture of life after university, from people who have only recently experienced the same process themselves.

Build experience, not just a CV

A lot of what we do comes back to one idea: giving computing students more opportunities actually to do computing.

That could mean joining a development project, entering a hackathon, learning a technology your course does not cover, meeting an employer, or simply finding other students who want to build something.

The Computing Society is open to students across the university, whatever your current level of experience.

Membership is free. Join us for workshops, projects, hackathons, industry events, Q&As, socials, and whatever we decide to build next.
