Celebrating the story of the BME Community in the NHS

Celebrating the Story of the BME Community in the NHS
Tuesday 16 October, 5.30pm
Hamish Wood Building (Room W010A)

GCU Students’ Association will be hosting an evening alongside the University to celebrate the great contribution of the BME community and highlight some of the challenges they still face today. This event will bring together a host of keynote speakers who will enlighten us as to the role of the BME community in different sectors and, in particular, in shaping the success of the NHS over the past 70 years.

Featuring guest speakers including:

Sir Geoff Palmer is Scotland's first black professor and will talk about life as an immigrant.

Sofi Taylor is NUS's Health Improvement Lead (Equality & Diversity) and will reflect on the windrush years. Sofi came to this country in the 1970’s when the British were recruiting young people from their ex-colonies (Hong Kong, Malaysia and India) to come to the UK and train as nurses.

Dr Rajan Madhok is a Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist. He was previously a Governor of Glasgow Caledonian University and was recently awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list (2018) for raising more than a million pounds for renal research in his late wife’s name.

Light refreshments will be served.
