University Senate Update | 24th September 2025

Tuesday 14-10-2025 - 09:14

Hey everyone!

We recently wrapped up our first Senate meeting of the academic year, and your student senators Tom-Tom, Hamza, Eilidh, Emma, Dylan, and I (Chinenye) were there representing you and making sure your voices were heard loud and clear.

Here’s a quick rundown of what we discussed and the key points we raised:

  • A member of staff brought up issues on the current political climate on-campus and its surroundings, VP GSBS contributed to the discussions and gave some suggestions, especially regarding Islamophobia awareness and inclusion. This was such an important conversation, we all agreed that the university needs to continue building a campus where every student feels safe, valued, and respected, no matter their background or beliefs.
  • There were some updates to the research degree regulations, mainly to make them clearer and ensure all postgraduate researchers get fair and consistent support across the university. The PGR regulation regarding the recognition for disabled students and scope for reasonable adjustments has also been updated. PhD thesis will now be submitted electronically instead of paper based. These updates are great steps toward improving the overall research experience for students.
  • We raised concerns about the student consultation processes and emphasised the need for this to happen at the early stages of decision making for student facing policies. This included a discussion on the consultation processes regarding potential programme suspensions.

We’ll keep pushing for transparency, inclusion, and genuine student input at every level.
If you’ve got any questions, thoughts, or issues you’d like us to raise in future Senate meetings, please reach out to us, we’re here to represent you!

Together, let’s make sure student voices stay at the heart of every decision.

Your Student Senate Representatives
Tom-tom, Hamza, Eilidh, Emma, Dylan, Chinenye
