The VP SHLS shares her week with you!

Hello everybody, I’ve been a little slow on the social media updates recently so I’m here now to tell you all about the week I’ve just had!

On Monday morning myself and the other FTO’s supported the UCU members who started their strike action by providing them with some tea and coffee and moral support to keep them warm and motivated while out striking in the cold. You can read our statement on the industrial action here. We then hosted a Chai Day as an event for The Circle Society in support of our Chancellor, Annie Lennox’s Circle movement supporting the empowerment of women and girls all around the world. All funds raised at the event will go towards putting on future events and also back into the local community projects to empower women. We then headed to the climate strike action group to make placards for the Glasgow Climate Strike march in George Square this Friday. We then met the Swedish Delegation on their visit to GCU and told them all about what we set out to do as officers and how the SA supports students and their academic interests. We then had our second Student Voice meeting where the FTO’s and elected student members held each other to account on their reports of their progress within their role since the last Student Voice meeting and we also discussed and approved Ideas from the website. You can submit an idea yourself here. This was all just Monday, wow!

On Tuesday I had some Annual Leave booked so nothing exciting here. However, on Wednesday myself and some of the staff members who were involved in the creation of Freshers 2019 met to discuss the improvements that could be implemented for Freshers 2020 so keep an eye out for changes next year! I then was invited over to INTO to join in on their International Lunch and meet some of the students. It was a lovely atmosphere with music from different countries playing and some tasty dishes from all around the world it really was my favourite lunch meeting to date!

On Thursday I met with Baxter Story to discuss having a Christmas Party in the Re: Union bar for the students in SHLS who are in a Peer Supported Community group to meet and mingle and get into the festive spirit! I then hosted Ask the Officer Online on Facebook so keep an eye out for the next one! I then attended the SCEBE Awards on behalf of Susan Docherty who couldn’t make the event. I was absolutely honoured to be welcomed by the students and staff of that school and was privileged to witness our amazing students with several awards.

And Friday was the best day. Every few months, all the sports sabbs from around Scotland who are affiliated to Scottish Student Sport meet up to share best practice and get involved in the good work around the sector of sport. At this Sabb Fourm we all went to Oriam at Herriott Watt for the first part of the day followed by a trip on a navy ship in Leith to do some team bonding and it was an amazing experience but also highlights how random our roles as Full Time Officers can be!

Thankful for everything I’m learning within this role and I hope this snippet of my past week has given you all some insight into the types of things we get up to, to represent our students. Every week may be different but every week we are doing it all to enhance the student experience!
