The GCU SA Freshers Guide - University

Monday 21-08-2017 - 00:00

Congratulations, you’re heading to GCU!

We here at GCU Students’ Association have put together a wee handy guide to help you get ready for September, which we'll be sharing with you over the summer.

Following on from our last post we've collected some of our best tips about making your way around campus and getting ready for your first day of term.

Campus

Rather than waiting until the first day of class to try and find your lecture hall why not take a wee half hour out of your Freshers’ Week to get acquainted with the campus. Scout out possible meeting areas for your group projects (like the Group Study Rooms in the Students’ Association Building, which can be booked on-line), or sign up to a class at The ARC. You can even take a virtual tour of campus or download a campus map.

Although the room numbering system may seem daunting at first, they all follow the same basic formula. The letter(s) at the beginning tell you which building the room is in, the first number tells you the floor, and the last digits tell you the room number. With this in mind if you are looking for A005 you would need to go to level zero of the Govan Mbeki Building.

Registration

Before you dust off your textbooks and replenish your stationery stash make sure you are registered for the year and have signed up for your classes.

If you need help with registering you can drop by the Campus Life Desk between 09:00 and 17:00 during the working week (Monday to Friday) and speak to a member of the Campus Life Team.

If you can't attend the desk during these hours then you can contact the team either by calling 0141 331 3338 or by e-mailing studentrecords@gcu.ac.uk.

Student ID

When you start studying here at GCU you will be issued with your own Student ID card. This card is used to record your attendance at classes, to gain access to certain secure areas on campus (including the computer lab in the Students’ Association Building), and acts as your library card.

Before you can collect your card from the Campus Life Lounge you will need to submit a suitable photograph either when registering on-line or by e-mailing registration@gcu.ac.uk.

Textbooks

If you have any old textbooks that you no longer need why not hand them in to the Book Exchange in the Students’ Association Building?

Remember that you can always look at joining our Official GCU Freshers 2017 group on Facebook for more information whilst you’re waiting for the next article!
