A massive thank you to GCU Foundation for supporting our Sports Clubs, Societies, Groups and Networks this year.

Thirty-one of our sports clubs, societies, groups and networks benefitted from donations from GCU Foundation from the Common Good Fund, and this impacted on one thousand four hundred and twenty student members involved.

This funding from GCU Foundation is so important to help to students organise and run activities and events, buy new equipment and pay for fees and instructors. Here’s what our students thought about the funding:

Connor George, Business Society, Treasurer

"The funds allocated by the common good fund enabled us to keep the annual GCU Business Ball ticket prices as low as possible. This allowed for the largest Business Ball since they started, with 150 students eating, dancing, and celebrating the end of the academic year at The Citation."

Amy Paterson, Dance Club, President

"We have been able to subside our competition and recreational dancers costume fees with the common good fund. We have also been able to put on more events such as a performance at Buchanan Galleries, bingo and a bring a friend to dance fundraiser where funds went directly to our chosen charity. This year we have also seen a major increase in our number of members so we aim to use this money for our show as it will be bigger than ever!"

Jessica Chappelle, Cali’s Angels, President

"This funding allowed us to come together as a society to create Christmas gifts for women and non-binary people in Glasgow who have experienced domestic/sexual abuse. The gifts are a combination of things the women may need and things that they may want and are nice to have. We also brought together women and non-binary people across the university campus to have some Christmas fun and to help them feel less lonely at this difficult time of year."

Tori Mackinnon, Gymnastics Club, President

"The funding provided by the Common Good Fund allowed for many students to achieve physical benefits where they improved their strength, coordination and flexibility through a fun and different type of exercise.  Further, it has had the ability to improve students mental wellbeing, and boosted their confidence. Moreover, it has allowed for many first year students to meet new people with similar interests and socialise at training where everyone is welcome and included."

Benedict Chinonso Obasi, Igbo Cultural Society, President

"We, the Igbo Cultural Society at Glasgow Caledonian University, extend our heartfelt gratitude to the GCU Common Good Foundation for their financial support.  With the funds provided, we successfully hosted our Cultural Day Celebration, which showcased Igbo traditions, music, and food, creating a vibrant platform for cultural exchange among students. The event not only enriched the GCU community's cultural awareness but also fostered inclusivity and a sense of belonging among attendees.

Additionally, the funds were instrumental in organizing our Freshers’ Welcome Program, ensuring a warm and supportive introduction to new students. This initiative helped freshers feel integrated, confident, and connected to the university community. The support has greatly enhanced the student experience at GCU by promoting cultural diversity, strengthening community bonds, and providing opportunities for meaningful engagement.  Thank you for empowering us to make a difference."

Anna Walker, Weightlifting, Treasurer

"The funding provided by the GCU Foundation is helping to cover travel expenses for our athletes who are travelling to London to compete at the British University Championships for powerlifting. Competing in powerlifting can be expensive, and these individuals have worked hard to achieve a qualifying total in order to compete at a national level and represent their university. We are very grateful for the funding that makes these opportunities more accessible to our athletes and gives them a chance to showcase what they (and Glasgow Caledonian University) are capable of! Thank you GCU Foundation!"

Craig Andrews, Caledonian Rocketry, Senior Management

"Thank you GCU Foundation. We bought glue, epoxy, plywood and eyebolts to help build our rocket for the Mach 25 competition."

Samuel Trombley, Mountaineering Club, President

"This fund has enabled the club to subsidize the cost of the recent Feshiebridge Trip for its members. This is an integral trip as this is where members are able to learn the required skills for basic winter mountaineering, meaning the sport can be practiced safely as they are taught how to navigate, move through the terrain safely, hazards, emergency procedures and avalanche awareness, thus giving said members a skill for life."
