On Thursday 20th April 2023 we held our annual celebration event. The STAR Awards in the Re:Union Bar and Grill. The STAR Awards recognises the hard work and dedication of GCU Students. The event involved a drinks reception followed by a meal and awards presentation.
GCU Student of the Year
GCU Student of the Year: Gino Obaseki
Gino is known as a serial volunteer for his community, and is passionate about influencing lives through volunteerism with a particular focus of environmentalism and climate change.
Lindsay Leadership Award: Osinach Sarah Agamanu
Osinach has helped to spread the word about the importance of self-love, and self-help practices for the development of good mental health.
Representation Awards
Academic Rep of the Year: Aminat Ogunlola
Students described this year’s winner as being an ‘approachable’ and ‘supportive’ individual who has helped secure a number of improvements to their learning experience.
Representation Network of the Year: Womens Representation Network
This group has given a voice to those they represent and helps to amplify their achievements and celebrate success as well as raising awareness of issues & reducing stigma.
Mental Health & Wellbeing Champion: Glasgow Students’ Nightline
The winner has allowed students to have a safe space to talk about anything they need to get off their chest, which is one of the best things you can do to look after your mental wellbeing
Ethical & Environmental Champion: Jessica Michael–Odobi
They have helped in educating students and individuals on the importance on climate education and how they can contribute to decarbonisation through various healthy lifestyles.
Societies Awards
Society of the Year: Ethical Hacking Society
This society was commended for giving its members the space to develop their skills and knowledge and creating networking opportunities. While also creating a social atmosphere by creating events that centred around the society’s main focus.
Best New Society: Risk and Finance
Risk and Finance Society created a space that allowed all years to participate in industry events, socials and collaborated with other societies that would help boost their perspective careers whilst also creating a fun and welcoming environment to students from different courses and backgrounds.
Best Society Event: Winter Ball (Events Society)
The event boasted the biggest numbers for the society and was a success start to finish.
Best Overall Contribution from a Committee Member: Andrew Collier
Andrew demonstrated great leadership skills, motivation and commitment to rebuilding the society after a difficult few years. They also promoted working with other societies and created academic opportunities for the society members.

Radio Caley
Best Behind the Mic: Robert MacDonald
Robert is an engaging presenter with their personality and charisma coming across in the show.
Best Overall Contribution: Jay Blakeway
Jay was instrumental to the running of the station this year and went over and above in their role in helping ensure Radio Caley is a wonderful place to volunteer.

Best Article: Hollywood’s Fashion is Toxic to Younger Generations- By Leona Stewart
It was also noted that they took great care when writing the article and showed their ability to cover hard hitting and important issues.
Best Overall Contribution: Rachel-Louise Gibson
Rachel-Louise took on extra roles this year and worked extremely hard to meet the deadlines. They have been a dedicated member of the team and has worked tirelessly to put out the three editions.
