Show Racism the Red Card Sports Campaign

Glasgow Caledonian University is a campus that prides itself in its equality and diversity and last week, our student-led Sports Council ran their first equality and diversity campaign for 2018. They chose to show support for the Show Racism the Red Card campaign as the campaigns mission statement is something the Sports Council members feel also applies to sports here at GCU.

Show Racism the Red Card is an anti-racism educational charity. We aim to combat racism through enabling role models, who are predominately but not exclusively footballers, to present an anti-racist message to young people and others. Show Racism the Red Card acknowledges that racism changes, as do the experiences of Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities in the UK. Our message and activities therefore need to be able to respond to such changes as and when appropriate.

As the GCU Students Associations values are Diversity, Community, Participation, Fun, Support and Leadership, the Sports Council felt running a Show Racism the Red Card campaign would extend these values to our sports clubs as they supported the campaign.

17 sports clubs backed the campaign by taking team photos on their field holding up the red card to show their support for equality and diversity within their club.

The Sports Council wants to thank all participating teams and would like to encourage all of the Wolfpack to continue to Show Racism the Red Card within their sport so that GCU remains an inclusive and diverse community.

If you ever witness or experience racism within the GCU community please contact the Students Associations Advice Centre for assistance in tackling the issue.
