GCU and GCU Students’ Association sign up to Scotland’s Charter for a Tobacco-free Generation
As part of our commitment to delivering a smoke-free campus, GCU, on National No Smoking Day, has signed up to Scotland's Charter for a Tobacco-free Generation – the first university campus to do so.
The Ash Scotland initiative looks to help reduce the harm caused by smoking and deliver a tobacco-free generation by 2034.
The aim of Scotland's Charter for a Tobacco-free Generation is to:
Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE said: "Tobacco smoking has an undeniably harmful impact on the health and well-being of smokers themselves and, through passive smoking, on those around them. It’s not surprising therefore that smoking is no longer the norm in our society and is no longer tolerated in many public places.
"It is important that Glasgow Caledonian University, as a research partner of Health Protection Scotland and a leader in training the Nursing and Allied Health Professions, makes a clear commitment to supporting a smoke-free campus.
"Scotland is one of the few countries in the world to set a target of raising a generation of citizens who are tobacco-free. At GCU, we strongly support the Charter and will act to create a tobacco-free culture that supports the health of our staff, students, Caledonian Club learners from local nurseries, primary and secondary schools, Advanced Higher Hub attendees and all other visitors."
Rachel Simpson, Student President at Glasgow Caledonian University Students' Association, said: "We will continue to work in close partnership with the University to help realise its vision to create a smoke-free campus.
"Over the coming weeks and months we will work to raise the visibility of our non-smoking policy to new and existing students, and provide a supportive environment for those wishing to quit."
You will notice an increase in signs and posters displayed over the coming months, reminding us it's the University's policy that smoking (including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, pipes etc) is prohibited throughout the campus. That means no smoking in our buildings, on our paths and walkways, in the Students' Association or in our vehicles.
Despite this, we are still seeing smoking taking place. If you are a smoker, you are required to smoke off-campus or visit the designated smoking area at the shelter behind the Hamish Wood building.
If you welcome visitors who would like to smoke, or see other staff or students smoking around campus, please let them know of our policy.
It is the collective responsibility of all of us to promote the University as a smoke-free environment and adhere to University policy.
