New Union Bar in the Students' Association!

Friday 18-08-2017 - 12:00
New bar

For the past ten years, every Student Election has heard the pledges of hopeful candidates to bring back a student union bar. For a long time, this has been a contentious issue, with historical problems blocking any progress that we hoped to make. 10 years ago, we had a union bar which unfortunately became financially unviable and the decision was made to close down commercial services.

However, with the changeover of the universities catering provider, I decided that we had a perfect opportunity to push forward the bar proposal as a result of a decade of student feedback.

After the Student Elections, work began on negotiating with the university to agree to look at the idea of a bar in the Students’ Association building. This resulted in a number of meetings and numerous committees, with the eventual deal being that the university catering provider, BaxterStorey and the Students Association would work in partnership to develop a brand new purpose built union bar in the building.

Over the summer months, we have been working tirelessly to press forward the design of the bar and the product line that it will sell, whilst also looking at the food and coffee offering available for students who don’t drink.

BaxterStorey have been instrumental in this process, providing sector leading insight into the catering needs of students and working with their suppliers to find us the perfect deal.

With the bar due to be fully operational by Freshers Week, it will bring a new dynamic to the student experience at GCU. Providing a unique social space where students can network, relax and get involved in different parts of the Association.

It will provide a safe drinking environment for students, with a new and quirky menu filled with some really unique items and pub grub, barista coffee provided by a well-known and popular supplier, all in a comfortable and atmospheric venue.

Despite being a stressful process, and an incredibly tight timeline, I’m phenomenally proud of the efforts everybody has put in to make this dream a reality, and making it part of the fabric of GCU Students Association for many years to come.

I’m excited for the week long programme of freshers events in the bar, beginning with the Freshers Launch, this will be topped off with the Official Bar launch on Monday of week one.

Eat, drink and relaxxxx
