Freshers Week 2018 Highlights

Thursday 04-10-2018 - 13:26

Two weeks on (already?!) from our fantastic Freshers Week 2018, Freshers Comms Team volunteer Dee McGloin shares her take on the highlights...

As the week finally draws to a close, so does our overwhelmingly successful fresher’s week! Throughout the last few days we’ve thoroughly enjoyed extending a warm welcome to all of our new freshers as they settle in around campus and attend our many events in between their induction classes. Those joining us for another year were also able to get involved with many societies and sports clubs that they hadn’t heard of before.

On Tuesday, we had the second day of our fresher’s fayre. The African Caribbean Society were really happy that their stall enabled them to introduce their fantastic society to so many new faces and spread the word about their movie night on the Friday.

The first round of our come and try events for our sports club’s began on Tuesday afternoon, which included our dance, trampolining and muay thai societies. Speaking with the fantastic students from G-Cal Muay Thai, it was apparent that they had an overwhelming demand of new students desperate to try the sport out, as their event was fully packed with new faces.

Many societies arranged events of their own such as the CUMSA’s Desi night and the EDIT’s drag night in our very own Re:union bar. At CUMSA, our students enjoyed an array of snacks, watched Netflix and got to know each other more. Over at the drag night, the host Marie Juana put on a fantastic show which included multiple performances and even a raffle to raise money for the award-winning student magazine.

Midweek, the LaFontaines and Colonel Mustard & The Dijon didn’t let storm Ali get in the way and went on to make our Big Gig a smash hit with our freshers. Not forgetting that many of our students are always looking for that perfect Instagram pic, our Friends couch provided just that!

Thursday had our crazy mini golf set up for those wanting a quick game after their last induction class. The last of our sports evenings were taking place, including volleyball. The team said that they got a lot of people to sign up earlier on in the week who are excited to train with them and start the new season as team members and supporters.

This year has been not only our biggest fresher’s week with more events, freebies and hilarity than ever before, but also one of our most successful, thanks to all of our new freshers’ getting involved and into student life. Good luck to all of our freshers on their first year of university!
