With trimester A’s end fast approaching its time to champion the successes of the sports teams on our Focus Sports programme.

Focus Sports is a development programme that stems from our 2020 sports strategy for GCU’s sports teams. All teams can apply for the programme and then six successful teams are elected by the sports council to take part.

Women’s hockey were selected to be on the programme for 2018-19 and so far in trimester A the girls have played in 4 BUCS fixtures with two successful wins placing them 3^rd in their league.

At Freshers this year the team were overwhelmed by a high turnout at their ‘Come and Try’ sessions which lead to a high volume of Freshers retention which saw the team expand to having a full 1^st team and a development team.

The committee are keen to grow their development team and are looking for girls that are interested in the sport to come along to one of their sessions to try it out! The development team welcomes beginners and experienced players and is a great opportunity to participate in university sport competitively. They train on Monday nights at Glasgow Green, just message the teams Facebook page if you wish to join them!

All student sports teams love a good night out and the hockey girls are no different! Every Wednesday night after their games you’ll find them in Light (minus their hockey sticks) ready to party! They welcomed their Freshers this year by having a ‘babies and grandparents’ bonding night and they also hosted a team Halloween party. The girls are also in the process of planning a subcrawl so keep your eyes peeled for details!

Coming up the girls will be having a team Christmas dinner to celebrate together before everyone parts ways for the Christmas break which is a great way for teams to bond.

They have two more BUCS fixtures to play in trimester A so hopefully the team will end the year on a high note.
