Focus Sport: Women’s Basketball Club

GCU’s women’s basketball club have had a hugely successful year and it’s time to champion their hard work and success from this academic year.

They kick-started the year with their ‘Come and Try’ session during Fresher’s week 2017 where they then secured their 13 members who would stick it out for the upcoming year and compete in the BUCS (British University and College Sports) 2A Scottish division.

Without a doubt the girls love the social aspect of the club. Throughout the year they arranged many successful events such as their ‘Welcome Back’ meet-up, a wheel-chair ‘come and try’ session and their hugely successful ‘Big Quiz Night’ - not to forget to mention the countless team nights out at Bamboo! Of course as well as these events, they have their games! During the course of the year the team have played against other university teams like Stirling, Edinburgh Napier, Dundee, Heriot-Watt and Strathclyde. The girls also competed in The Glasgow Taxis Cup event which was a huge success and appeared in the GCU video from the event.

Training nights are fun and always remain challenging, no matter if beginner level or 10 year expert you will feel welcomed and supported throughout the year. The girls are excited for 2018 Fresher’s to come around so they can promote the team and hopefully introduce new members to the sport.

‘With our high team morale and our team’s strong family-like bond, we will welcome new comers next season to help us achieve our aims! We hope to continue to organise more friendly games for development as well as host another wheelchair basketball event with Basketball Scotland come next term for all to try!’ – Club Committee.

A Word From the coach-

‘My focus next year will be on expansion, inclusion and development. Creating and maintaining a solid second team, bringing expertise to the squad from out with, using quality impact training sessions and also aiming to make an impact competitively. I'd love for every player to finish the season and think “yeah, I gave it everything and I did as much as I could”. Winning is a bonus, and I’m sure with hard work and dedication it's a bonus we will achieve’.
