First Day of Freshers 2018

Wednesday 19-09-2018 - 10:29

Glasgow Caledonian University’s Freshers Week is finally underway and Monday the 17th of September couldn’t have started this long awaited event off any better!

The week was kicked off by day one of the Freshers Fayre, the best opportunity for the university clubs, sports, and societies, as well as other participants to celebrate GCU’s loud, vibrant, friendly, and inclusive atmosphere. This event allowed all of our new students (as well as returning students and staff) to find out lots of information about what goes on throughout the year at GCU and how they can get involved. There were also many free goody bags up for grabs!

The stalls within the fayre covered a variety of popular local business, as well as some of our fantastic sport’s clubs. The boxing club stall in particular got everyone involved by letting the freshers vote upon what their new club logo will be this year! In attendance were some of our societies such as Radio Caley, The Edit, Disney Society, and the Christian Union who all worked very hard letting our freshers know about their events that will be happening later on during the week. GCU's award winning student magazine, The Edit, were getting the word out about their Drag Night event which takes place in the Re:Union bar on Tuesday 18th. You can check out all of our events going this week on GCU Student’s website.

Another highlight of the day was the Fresher’s Address which took place in the Saltire Centre at midday. This was a great opening to freshers week as we had our student president Rachel Simpson take the stage to welcome our new students into the university, as well as introducing everyone to the rest of the Full Time Officers: Moses Apiliga, Yetunde Ogedengbe, and Eilidh Fulton.

Many of our returning GCU students are volunteering this week in order to not only be more involved with the University, but also help out our new freshers as they settle into their first week with us. One of our volunteers said that the first day of freshers was really fun, they got to do a lot of socialising and met so many new people around campus. They look forward to catching up with their course mates and going to all the exciting events throughout the week, such as the LGBTQ+ alternative bar crawl on Wednesday night (find out more about this event here.

A massive thanks to everyone who took part and made today an incredible start to freshers week, we can’t wait to see everyone enjoy the rest of the action packed week ahead!
