Following the UK Supreme Court ruling on the Equality Act which took place in April 2025, we want to make clear our support of our trans students. We are sorry that this has taken so long and want to ensure you know that your Students’ Association is standing with you.

We feel there are many elements of the Supreme Court ruling which are unclear and may be dangerous to our student community. Due to this, we submitted a Students’ Association response to the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC’S) consultation on the ruling. This response was heavily influenced by guidance developed by the National Union of Students (NUS) who worked closely with trans students in creating this.

However, we must do more to be inclusive of our trans student community. We want to work with the LGBT+ Network, the Women’s Network and the whole student community to ensure that students are involved in the decision-making process and their experiences are heard.  We always encourage feedback and involvement from our student body when delivering campaigns and advocating and want to hear your voice. You can get involved in the Students’ Association and provide feedback through our Representation Networks, submitting an ‘idea’ to Student Voice, societies, academic reps or you can reach out to your Full Time Officer team.

We understand this will be a difficult and uncertain time for our trans student community.  Support can be accessed through our Students' Association’s Advice Service or the universities Wellbeing Centre.
