Each year at Glasgow Caledonian University, around 1500 students disclose a disability.

Alongside the Disability Team in the University who work to provide support to students who disclose with long term medical conditions, sensory impairment, mental health difficulties, physical impairment, specific learning disabilities (e.g. dyslexia) and students on the autism spectrum, GCU Students’ Association also work to provide a range of support for students who self-identify as having a disability.

We do this through our Disabled Students’ Officer, a Disabled Students’ Liberation Group, a Network and a Full Time Officer Executive Champion. Each of these networks work to help improve the experience of students at GCU who have a disability, and you can find out more below!

Disabled Students’ officer

The Disabled Students’ Officer is responsible for ensuring that disabled students at GCU are

effectively and legitimately represented. The Disabled Students’ Officer must self-define as

having a disability.

This year, the Disabled Students' Officer position is vacant, and more information about the role can be found here –

https://www.gcustudents.co.uk/liberation

The officer will also have opportunities such as sitting on the Associations’ Equality and Diversity Committee, Student Voice, and attending National Conferences (if they wish!). If you have any questions please get in touch with representation@gcustudents.co.uk J

Disabled Students’ Liberation Group

The Students' Association supports four Liberation Campaigns for B.M.E. Students, Disabled Students, LGBT+ Students, and Women Students studying at GCU. We also support representation groups for Student Carers, Mature and Part-Time Students, Care Experienced Students, and many more!

These campaigns exist to represent the interests of the students who define themselves as belonging to them and to fight against discrimination wherever it takes place.

You can find out more about the work of the Disabled Students’ Liberation Group here-

Disabled Students’ Network

The GCU Disabled Students' Network is a liberation group for Glasgow Caledonian University Students who self-define as having a disability or impairment. The group enables students to meet other each, share advice and organise meet ups, alongside campaigning!

The network is managed by the GCU Disabled Students' Officer, and supported each year by the Full Time Officer Champion.

We are currently recruiting for a Disabled Students’ Officer, and the Full Time Officer Champion is Rachel Simpson (Student President – president@gcustudents.co.uk)

The group is co-ordinated by GCU Students' Association.
