The message from us was clear, take action now or we’ll take it to the streets.
A day before the rally itself, we held a Banner-Making session at the Social Learning Space in the Students' Association building where students and the Full Time Officers collectively brainstormed and created banners. ‘Action Not Words’, ‘Don’t Burn Our Future’ and ‘System Change Not Climate Change’ being just a few of the phrases that called the governments around the world present at COP26 to act now.
At the rally itself, along with the large crowd, we kept ourselves and others around us in high spirits by singing the renowned songs for Climate Action and chants that empowered the crowd in the long walk to George Square.
I don’t believe that this was the first time the student movement at GCU came together for a cause that affects them and I’m sure that this won’t ever be the last. For every problem that we are faced with as students, there is a way to resolve it and that is by coming together and raising our voice. Showcasing our position and showcasing our ability to mobilise each other. And that will always be the heart of what we do as the student movement of GCU.
The movement doesn’t stop here. It continues, to the next issue, to the next campaign and to the next fight for us, the students.
