Be the change you want to see in the world...

Monday 28-10-2019 - 09:37

At GCU Students' Association we're always looking for ways to become more sustainable.

The Activities Department had lots of old sports team kit lying around and I was asked to look for the best way to reuse the clothing.

I did some research into local community groups to see who would get the best use out of the kit. On Facebook, I came across a post by The Charter's International Run Crew in Tollcross calling for donations for their local Parkrun as there are lots of refugees within the crew who have just been uprooted to a new city but still had a drive to participate in sport. After speaking with the Outreach Coordinator, he told me that a lot of those refugees had expressed to him that they wished to play for a local football team however they never had anything appropriate to wear on field.

The Students' Association and I were happy to donate the kit to Parkhead Nazarene's football programme earlier in the summer and today I was sent a lovely photo of our team kit being recycled for a good use.

"Thanks again for the football kit, it has been much appreciated by the footballers!"

Humanitarian aid is an act that’s close to my heart due to my previous work with the refugee crisis in Serbia a few years ago. I would urge you to clear out your wardrobes and cupboards and see if there’s any clothing or food that can be donated to groups like this.
