Description

What is Nightline?

Glasgow Students' Nightline is a confidential telephone, text, and online listening and information service run by trained students volunteers for the students of Glasgow Caledonian, Strathclyde and Glasgow Universities.  Nightline is open from 7pm to 7am, Monday to Friday during term time.

Nightline is there for anyone that's having a tough time, needs a friendly ear to listen to whatever's on their mind, or who just needs the phone number for a local taxi company after a night out.

We provide our service according to six main Nightline principles:

  • Anonymity: we will not ask you for any details about yourself and we do not disclose information about ourselves or other Nightline volunteers.
  • Confidentiality: anything you call about will be kept completely private within the organisation, with the exception of calls relating to acts of terrorism.
  • Non-judgementality: we treat every call and every caller the same, putting aside any personal opinions or prejudices. We accept you without judgement.
  • Non-directionality: we will not tell you how to solve a problem or give you advice. We are there to listen and help callers in exploring their own emotions, situations and options.
  • Commitment: Nightline aims to ensure we provide the best service we can by seeking to ensure all shifts are covered so that our service is reliable and available as advertised.
  • Support: we strive to support callers and our fellow volunteers at all times.

Volunteering with Nightline

There's so much to gain from being part of Nightline.  If you're interested in learning new, valuable listening and communication skills, gaining experience in supporting people on a wide variety of topics, and making some new friends, then we'd like to hear from you. We are always looking for enthusiastic, motivated, and supportive students who are willing to volunteer to give some time to help other students in need.

Applications are open to all current students at GCU, Strathclyde and University of Glasgow however volunteers must be willing to commit to two trimesters of volunteering (excluding summer terms), and as such applicants their final trimester of study are not eligible.

Recruitment is by application form and interview and happens twice a year: in Sepember and January for training sessions that take place in October and February.

Please  visit the Glasgow Students' Nightline website for more information about this volunteering opportunity and what is involved in the recruitment, training, and volunteering role - the application form is direct from the website.

Glasgow Student Nightline recruits a limited number each year students at GCU, Strathclyde and University of Glasgow so unfortunately not all applicants will be invited to interview or offered a place.  Recruitment decisions are made by the Glasgow Students' Nightline volunteer committee.
