Black Lives Matter: The Discussion

INTRODUCTIONS

To begin this years’ Black History Month, we decided to host a discussive event about current issues.

WHAT IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH?

Black history month originated in the USA, but has been a recurrence in the UK for the past 40 years.

BHM should be a time where we reflect on the progress that has been made to bring black history back to mainstream history and not just a month where we suddenly remember that black history exists.

Question:

What does black history month mean to you?

Or what would you like it to mean?

WHAT DOES BLACK LIVES MATTER MEAN?

For the ones who might not know, what are we talking about when we say Black Lives matter?

BLM is both a movement and a global organization. It started in the USA back in 2013 as the #blacklivesmatter following one of the numerous incidents involving the unjust death of a black american. Today we would like to focus the conversation closer to home and on what black lives matter means to us in the UK.

Question:

How do you feel the issue is being addressed in the UK?

What can be done to better address the issue?

FORMS OF RACISM

Racism is  experienced on different levels and it comes in many shades.

Many of us on the panel today happen to be international students and I imagine our experiences to have some differences, as Africans in the UK for example, opposed to Caribbeans or Black british students and so on.

Question:

Can you talk about what separates you in your experiences of racism?

STRUCTURAL RACISM

With structural racism we are talking about all those social, political and economic policies that contribute to racial inequalities.

HEALTH SYSTEM?

With institutionalized racism we refer to the practice of single institutions, such as school or your workplace.

Question:

Being a black patient?

Being a black health worker?

The event will be led by GCU Students' Association Ethnic Diversity Network.
