Your Ideas Into Action - Mindfulness Sessions

Thursday 01-11-2018 - 11:33
Mindfulness

GCU student Keir Thompson had a bright spark about having short mindfulness sessions during exam times and submitted it to Ideas.  He wrote, “A study showed that 10 minutes of mindfulness reduced stress and insomnia. It has been shown than mindfulness can enhance student performance, increase resilience and reduce anxiety over a longer period.”

Keir’s idea for mindfulness sessions was taken to October’s Student Voice. Members of Student Voice felt that this was a great idea and that it should not only be limited to exam times but should be offered thought the academic year. It was unanimously decided to endorse the idea and Rachel Simpson, Student President, will be actioning it.

Rachel has already led on the creation of Mental Health Partnership with the university to put students mental health at the core of university services. This in turn has led to revising the mitigating circumstances policy to be more mental health friendly.  The Students' Association's Advice Centre also has several resources online for helping to deal with stress and depression amongst other wellbeing topics and they also offer free, impartial advice to students. Further, NightLine, our late night hotline, is here to talk at the hours you most need it.
