Visiting our students in New York!

Friday 11-01-2019 - 17:10

In mid-December, both myself and Eilidh had the opportunity to visit our GCU Campus in New York (Glasgow Caledonian New York College, or GCNYC for short)!

Whilst visiting the campus, we had the chance to look around, meet and speak with our graduating students, and learn about the important work the students of GCNYC are carrying out.

After arriving, (and getting some well-needed sleep!) on the Thursday evening, we were then able to attend an event on Friday at which the first ever cohort of GCNYC Students presented their research thesis in 3 minutes. It was a wonderful event, and each piece of research was so diverse and different from the next. Students at our GCNYC campus are focused on innovating the fashion industry to make it more environmentally aware and sustainable, as our New York Campus is also known as the Centre for Fair Fashion! GCU, and GCU Students’ Association, hold sustainability very dear to its heart with both institutions having achieved accreditations such as the Eco Campus Platinum Award, and Green Impact Awards, so having the opportunity to see that our students deeply share those values, and are passionate about spreading the word of sustainable fashion is really exciting!

Following on, during Saturday, we attended the GCNYC Commencement ceremony. At the ceremony, GCNYC recognised the founder of the United Nations Global Compact, Dr Georg Kell, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. This was followed by the students walking the stage to mark the completion of their studies! The ceremony ended with a few words from our Principal, Professor Pamela Gillies, followed traditionally by the Pipe Major!

Being able to attend such a milestone event for GCNYC was such a heart-warming experience that certainly brought a tear to our eyes. It was an honour to be able to see our first cohort of students in their commencement ceremony, listen to their project presentations, and share in their special day, and we look forward to seeing the future of GCNYC and wish the all of the students the best of luck in their future endeavours!
