Thank You GCU Foundation

Thursday 19-05-2022 - 15:37

A massive thank you to GCU Foundation for supporting our Sports Clubs, Societies, Groups and Networks this year.

Seventeen of our sports clubs, societies, groups and networks benefitted from donations from GCU Foundation from the Common Good Fund.

This funding from GCU Foundation is vital in helping to organise and run activities and events, buy new equipment and pay for fees and instructors. Here’s what our students thought about the funding.

Physiotherapy Society

"We used the money to organise a continuing professional development (CPD) workshop weekend for the physiotherapy students at GCU. The money meant we could pay qualified physiotherapists to deliver 30-minute presentations about their work and teach us new skills/knowledge. Ultimately, we had 9 physiotherapists delivering individual talks. Our society members came away with new knowledge, CPD experience that will help their employability and a deeper understanding of the career path they have chosen to study!” Louise Dunn, Chair

Fencing Club

“This funding has been essential in allowing us to improve our offerings. Previously we only offered 1 of the 3 weapons in our sport, and only at a beginner level. With the funds we have received we are now able to fully offer all 3 weapons at a good level of ability. Without this additional funding our club would not be able to field BUCS teams, of which we now have 2, nor would we have been as competitive as we are.” Ryan Johnston, President

Women’s Gaelic Football Club

“This fund has allowed us to provide the team with much needed new equipment, a skilled coach and the ability to travel to our away matches with no extra cost to our members. With this funding we have been able to run a more accessible and skilled team for the students of GCU. The team provides a community for those who have moved to Glasgow from Ireland, connecting us with each other and others like us from universities all over Scotland and it is only possible to do this with the help of funding such as this.” Caoimhe Cullen, Committee Member

Psychology Society

"The class went brilliantly and basic self-defence techniques were taught to help keep our students safe. Attendees reported improved confidence in their ability to protect themselves and everyone enjoyed learning about safeguarding in a fun and secure setting. Instructors offered free admission to classes for the remainder of February for everyone in attendance that day. A huge thank you from the Psychology Society, the LGBT+ Liberation Group, and GCU Students to the Common Good Fund for making this opportunity possible!", Zainab Ali, Vice President.

Cheerleading Club

“The common good fund has helped our team afford to attend the biggest cheerleading competition of the year in a time where so many of us have been impacted financially and have had to wait so long for the opportunity to compete. This has been incredibly helpful to our competitive teams during a very challenging time.” Linzi Smith, Treasurer

Men’s Volleyball Club

“The money received from the GCU Common Good Fund has helped to provide new kits and allowed the club to launch back up again. After a year out without any volleyball the funding has helped the club to get back to where it was. The team has used the kits to represent GCU in our so far successful BUCS games!” Eben Crichton, Secretary
