Student Case Study - Douglas Stewart, Student Leaders Programme

Douglas Stewart, BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition and Dietetics

How did you first get involved?

A group of us wanted to resurrect the Nutrition and Dietetics Society that had closed down, put some events together, and encourage all of the different dietetic year groups to mix and learn from each other. I was a member of the Committee of the nutrition and dietetics society, joined the Student Leaders Programme and became a Student Leaders Trainer.

Why did you decide to get involved?

I wanted to get involved in the society to develop something to leave behind at GCU (besides my dissertation!), that would benefit dietetic students for years to come.I originally decided to do the Student Leaders Programme for the benefits to my CV and to meet other students.

What difference has it made to your university experience being involved?

I have really enjoyed growing the society, and seeing the different years mixing, sharing information and getting more out of the dietetics course.  I've also learned to cater for large groups of people as a long with the other committee members we made Christmas dinner for 40 people!  With the Student Leaders Programme, it has been really useful to get used to presenting in front of groups of people, and helping them learn something new.

What difference has your involvement made to others?

I'd like to think that the society has helped all of the years feel more integrated, and like a student community on campus, as the intakes are so small; there were only 17 people in my year!  I would also like to think that the students who came on the workshops I delivered for the Students' Association, came away with having learned something new, and were able to use it to enhance their experience at university.
