Societies Spotlight: Pole Society

Pole society article

This week our societies are in the spotlight and every day we are interviewing different Society committee members, today we are catching up with Emma who is the founder and president of the pole society.

1.What made you want to set this up?

I wanted to Introduce more people to pole, and help people understand what it is. I also thought that since most other unis have a pole soceity, why should we not have one? I also liked the active aspect to it, as this is something some societies can be lacking. Further, i knew a lot of students who wanted to start pole but thought it was too expensive or didn't have the confidence to go to a class,  having the society has made it more accessible and less daunting for all students

2. What are the main benefits of being involved in a society?

Getting to know others, socialising specifically with like minded people. It also gives you a chance to meet people from other courses who you wouldn’t normally get the chance to meet. It can open up a lot of new opportunities. Another amazing benefit is that i have defintely learnt leadership skills, event management skills and skills in team working which i feel will all benefit me in the future.

3What kind of things do your society get up to?

We have our weekly pole classes but on top of that we have social nights. We also try to promote the wellbeing aspect of pole on social media, as a lot of people may not realise the benefits of pole for your mental/physical health.

4. If you could have any celebrity join your society who would it be and why?

It would defintely be Lizzo as she is not afraid to be who she is. She is confident in herself the way she is and doesn't focus on what she wishes she could have. I really like that she accepts herself as she is, and has that self belief. I think she'd be a great addition to the society.

5. What’s next for the pole society?

We are planning a a big charity fundraiser in March which will be a pub quiz in Re:Union bar and all proceeds will be for a charity. We will continue to run our weekly classes but we are also trying to set up aerial hoop class. In terms of next year we are also looking at the possibility of an end of year showcase, which is exciting.
