Societies Spotlight: Common Good Society

Monday 24-02-2020 - 10:25
Common good article

This week our societies are in the spotlight and every day we are interviewing different Society committee members, let's start the week with Ryan & Asmaa from the GCU Common Good Society

1. Why did you choose to get involved in your society?

R: I wanted to get more involved in university life, i had tried a few sports teams and i was just keen to do something different.

A: I wanted to challenge myself, and put myself forward for something different than i had done before

2. What are the main benefits of being involved in a society?

R: It is very rewarding and you definitely get back what you put in. So you can take a much more relaxed approach or if you put in a lot of work you will get a higher output.

A: Networking, it is definitely a better and easier way to meet people than in classes. It is easier to communicate and makes for a better experience as you are working with people who are involved because they want to be not because they have to be.

3. What does your society get up to?

R: We have organised a stall a few times to promote volunteering and we set up initiatives with different charities. We have been organising food bank donation drives in collaboration with other societies and sports clubs for the Glasgow SE Food bank, and a donation drive for the Anthony Nolan Trust.

A: We just try to spread the common good message around university, and try to make achieving the common good award easier for students. We aim to inspire others and always try to work on varied projects which are not always the same.

4. If you could have any celebrity join your society who would it be?

A: JK Rowling as she does lots of charity work and donates a lot too.

5. What is next for the society?

R: We want to get together a team of volunteers to go out and do charity work together.

A: Yeah and we are just constantly trying to get more people involved, we also hope to plan a few socials too.
