Launch of our Quiet Room

Wednesday 26-02-2020 - 14:44

As part of my work on the Student Mental Health Agreement I put forward the idea of a quiet room within the Students’ Association. This Idea was created from a collaboration of ideas by myself and Moses Apiligia (VP GSBS), which led to me submitting a proposal to Student Voice to use Room NH205 on Level 2 of the Students' Association Building as a Quiet Room.

Prior to the accepted proposal I consulted with the Women’s Officer as well as the LGBT+ Officer, who were currently using the space, and the both groups were happy with the changes. I cleared out the room and gave it a fresh coat of paint and a good clean, painted a nice calming picture and brought in some plants to give it a nice zen ambience. As part of my work for ‘Feel Fab Feb’ I kitted the room with pens and doodle pads for colouring in to help with mindfulness and relaxation.

The Quiet Room is for students to practice mindfulness and a space that provides information for students struggling with anxiety. The room is accessible to all students and staff, and will be used as a space to 'get away from it all' - when students or staff simply want somewhere to go where they are unlikely to be disturbed. It can be used for contemplation, meditation and mindfulness. The room is also intended to be a digital detox space as the Quiet Room is a place to refrain from using electronic devices such as smartphones or computers, and to be regarded as an opportunity to reduce stress. However, headphones are allowed for you to listen to music or shut out the world for a little while.

Signs will be going up on the doors from March 2020 and I will be putting up a few other posters, plants and some better lighting, however the room is open now to be used at your leisure. I hope you enjoy and that it helps with your positive mental health.
