Care Experienced Humans - a human rights perspective

Thursday 20-04-2023 - 18:38
D. grimm sv elections 2023

David Grimm, Care Experienced Officer, will be in discussion with James Moohan, GCU Student Wellbeing Adviser (Care Experienced and Estranged Students), at a webinar dedicated to promoting awareness of care experienced humans throughout history, examining their importance through a human rights based perspective. The webinar is free and you can book your ticket here.

James' lecture will present on the rights of care experienced people and unintended consequences of past policies and reforms, including the 1833 Factory Act and the displacement of children and young people from the family home through the uses of transportation, poor houses, and reformatories.

The lecture will be followed by a short discussion between James and David Grimm with time for participants to engage in the discussion and raise questions.

David Grimm is a care experienced student who has spent the last two decades working alongside campaigners and advocates to try and achieve positive policy reform for the benefit of care experienced people throughout Scotland and the world.

Currently studying social work at undergraduate level, David is hoping to join the MSc in Human Rights with a view to a future role of advocating on behalf of children in care. David has been a member of Government commissions looking into the effects of care as well as providing input to the care review and watches eagerly to see how change will unfold for the care experienced community and how human rights will be enhanced for children in Scotland as we all aim to develop our knowledge and understanding.

The webinar will be introduced by Professor Angela O'Hagan, Programme Leader for the MSc in Human Rights and Depute Director of the WISE Centre for Economic Justice.

This event was inspired by Who Cares Scotland's initiative on Care History month, the WISE series of Conversations on Care, and the passion and commitment of James and David.
