Hike - A' Mharconaich & Geal Chàrn

You will be required to have full membership to the club to attend and purchase a ticket for this trip. Details for purchase of tickets through this page will be published in due course, so keep a look out on our Instagram page for updates.

 

We will be summiting 2 moderate Munros on this outing near Drumochter.

 

Distance: 11.5km

Ascent: 731m

Time (approx.): 4-6 hours

As per, you will be required to have a minimum of: hiking boots (that cover/protect the ankles) and waterproofs, and preferably clothing that is not made of cotton, and no jeans for safety reasons. A headtorch is also a necessity. If you are unsure please contact the club, as you will not be permitted on the trip without meeting the above requirements.

 

Transport

We will be travelling by van which will be arranged by the club.

 


Outward Journey: Meet outside the Student Union at 7:00am, we will be departing by 7:10am (please arrive promptly so we can leave promptly).

 


Return Journey: We anticipate arriving back in Glasgow for the evening.

Background info on the mountains: These are the northerly two summits of the four Munros on the west side of the Drumochter Pass. Geal Chàrn is a featureless lump with superb views towards Ben Alder, whilst A' Mharconaich is the shapliest of the range, with a steep prow prominent from the A9.

 

Necessary Gear

This equipment is essential for a safe and fun day out in the Highlands!

  • Waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Walking boots
  • Headtorch
  • Gloves
  • Warm hat
  • Walking trousers (we will not take you up the mountain if you wear denim!). These should be made of a synthetic material, softshell-pants are ideal
  • Multiple warm layers - temperatures on the summit will be cold
  • Backpack
  • At least 2l of water, warm drinks in a thermos are always a good idea
  • Packed Lunch
  • Snacks
