We are going to... Braemar!
You will be required to have full membership to the club to attend and purchase a ticket for this trip. Details for purchase of tickets through this page will be published in due course, so keep a look out on our Instagram page for updates. It is recommend to purchase a ticket as early as possible as weekend meets tend to sell out fast.
We will be making the journey up to Braemar on the Friday afternoon/early evening and will likely have staggered leave times for the transport, this will be discussed in the pre-trip meeting.
Malcolm Airey, who has taken over the role of St John Scotland Mountain Safety Instructor with Mountaineering Scotland, will be joining us on this trip to deliver navigation and mountain skills training, this is a great opportunity to improve your skills with a professional. There will be a total of up to 6 spaces on day 1 specifically for training with Malcolm which we highly reccommend attending for new members (or old ones!) as it is a great way to learn mapwork and mountain safety which will build confidence. More advanced options for day 2 will be explored based on numbers. Each respective day prepare for a full day on the mountain.
A little bit about Malcolm taken from the Mountaineering Scotland website "From taking up climbing as a teenager and being heavily involved in the mountaineering club at Strathclyde Uni, he then pursued a career in the outdoors from 2008 onwards and currently works as a winter mountaineering and climbing instructor (WMCI) with a wide variety of clients all over the Highlands. Over the passing of time and a few grey hairs later, he still fondly remembers his university days of regular winter weekend adventures, and looks forward to sharing hints and tips for staying safe whilst making the most of them as St John Scotland Mountain Safety Instructor." For this trip Malcolm will be taking out groups on both Saturday and Sunday (1:6 ratio).
Please see the advised kit list.
Day 1: If you have bought a ticket for mountain skills, you will spend day 1 with Malcolm, who will go through everything to keep you safe for a day in the mountains. Everyone else will partake in a different mountain activity. Day 2 Malcom will take a group for either more mountain skills or something more advanced, everyone else will partake in in a different mountain activity. All will be discussed in the pre-trip meeting.
Malcolm will be delivering a presentation to everyone on the Saturday evening for everyone attending.
This trip sees the club travelling to and staying in Braemar which is located in the heart of The Cairngorms. We have a lot of mountains at our disposal, with particular note is the Munros located through Glenshee including the Glas Maol 4 and The Cairnwell 3, there is also good access to Tolmount and Tom Buidhe. Lochnagar is also within reach of Braemar. There is also the option of longer days to the north through the Linn of Dee offering Ben Avon, Beinn Bhreac and also on the south Càrn Bhac to name but a few. Plans will be discussed in the pre-trip meeting and during the weekend. We will of course be subject to the weather in terms of where will give us the best days out.
We are staying at Braemar Village Hall, so bring your own sleeping mat and bag. As always if you are unsure please contact the committee, we will be covering things in the pre-trip meeting.
Facilities include:
- A large hall which is 19m x 9m and has a wooden floor, this is where we will be sleeping/socialising.
- A small hall which is 5m x 6m, can be used for socialising.
- A kitchen with a cooker, fridge, freezer and basic kitchen equipment.
- There are ladies and gents toilets, which contain showers.
We will need to clean the hall before we leave and we expect everyone to help with this, and in usual GCUMC fashion we aim to leave the place cleaner than we found it.
This trip will require non-winter orientated gear, but please remember to bring a warm layer still. If you're unsure on what to bring please contact us.
Please see the kit list.
As this is a trip with accomodation we will be sleeping in the hall for 2 nights, you will be required to have a sleeping bag and sleeping mat (we also have a limited amount to use if you do not have these, and you MUST bring your own sleeping bag liner) along with your day sack for the trip, prepare for 2 days worth of mountain activity. It is also important that you bring something to eat in the evening, although there are places to eat nearby.
If you wish to loan any club equipment for the trip, please contact the Gear Secretary (Equipment will be loaned out on a first ask, first serve basis).
