St Andrews Anatomy Day

The ECS proudly presents the annual trip to the University of St Andrews Medical School. We will be spending the day working through the anatomy and physiology behind the A-E assessment with the aid of prosected cadavers and expert teaching staff.

This will be a clinically focused day looking specifically at anatomy relating to our (c)A-E assessment and interventions. You will get the chance to get hands-on and handle real organs (brains, hearts, lungs etc) and examine their anatomical positioning within the human body.

You will be working within small groups rotating around a number of stations which will have either a professor or doctor tutor guiding your learning while you explore the human anatomy in detail.

Highlights of Topics Covered: (40min per station)

Airway/C-spine: Structure of the spine, anatomy of the airway, airway manoeuvres and adjunct positioning

Breathing: Anatomy and function of the lungs, effects of hemothorax and pneumothorax on the lungs, anatomical sites of needle decompression, flail chests, location of where a PE could occur and its effect on lung function and pathophysiology of asthma and COPD

Circulation: Anatomy of the heart, location of significant blood vessels around the body, identify and name the coronary arteries and pathophysiology of heart failure

Disability: Anatomy of the brain, arterial and venous blood vessels in relation to strokes, relate physiology of the brain to the FAST test, describe components of the brain stem and spinal cord, pupillary response

Exposure – Abdomen and Pelvis: Anatomy of the abdomen and pelvis, identify distinct cavities, understand the location of abdominal pain to specific organs, and explain the importance of pelvic binders in relation to blood vessels

Exposure – Upper and Lower Limbs: Recall major bones, identify locations for IV and IO access, describe major blood vessels and nervous
