Our facilitator for this event is Debbie O’Reilly a Advanced Paramedic from ireland and owner of New3Fit who is flying all the way to deliver this talk. She will also have generous discounts for students on her fitness and nutrition plans. Debbie has left a small introduction about herself:
"Hello,
My name is Debbie O’Reilly and I have been working with the National Ambulance Service in Ireland since 2011, I currently work as an Advanced Paramedic in the south east of Ireland.
I am humbled to have been invited to the Glasgow Caledonian University to speak to Paramedic students about wellness, nutrition & fitness for emergency shift workers.
The reason I first became involved in health & nutrition was to improve my own athletic ability & peak performance in my sport. After dedicated research & science-based training I was awarded the opportunity to safely help competitive athletes & regular exercisers with their health & fitness goals. This led me to develop a keen interest in nutrition, fitness & wellness for shift workers, particularly those in the emergency sector.
Shift work disrupts our bodies circadian rhythm, the World Health Organisation classified night shift work as a probable carcinogen due to this circadian disruption.
We are at a higher risk of developing Abdominal obesity, Cardiovascular disease, Diabetes, Metabolic problems associated with irregular eating habits & poor diet, and much more.
As well as affecting Physical health; our Mental Health, Performance & Safety are also at risk.
I developed a 90-day program under my business banner ‘Fit Emergency’ & ‘New3Fit’ with an aim of teaching emergency shift workers everything they need to know about nutrition, how to safely drop body fat, fuelling your body for shift work, regulating eating
habits and improving sleep.
I want to help Paramedics minimise as best as possible the implications shift work has on your health. We cannot eliminate all factors (that would entail giving up shift work) but we become experts at minding our bodies & reduce some risks by adapting a health and fitness lifestyle."
