GCU Mountaineering Winter Weekend

Join us for our first weekend away!

This weekend is for anyone who always wanted to get out on the Scottish Hills in winter conditions. You do not need any previous experience with winter hiking/mountaineering!

Where?
We will be staying at Glencoe village hall, right in the heart of one of Scotland's most beautiful landscapes, so make sure to bring sleeping matts and sleeping bags, the club has a few new sleeping matts which can be borrowed.

What?
This is really up to you!
Ali Rose, the mountaineering instructor who was with us on Ben Chonzie, will be there for the whole weekend and will be taking those of you who are interested out on a winter skills training, showing you how to use ice axes and crampons, how to safely move on snow and ice, how to navigate the wintery landscapes with map and compass, and, most importantly, how to enjoy the Scottish hills in winter. Ali can instruct 6 people per day, which gives us a total of 12 places for the training. If you want to take part in this training, buy one of the "Skills Training with Ali" tickets, if you want to join us for the weekend, but are not interested in the training, buy the "Weekend without Skills Training" ticket. There is a question in the questionnaire of the "Weekend without Skills Training" ticket asking you if you want to be added to the waitlist for the Skills Training should the Skills Training Tickets be sold out.
Apart from the training there are many other options in and around Glencoe:

  • Ice Climbing (indoor) at Ice Factor in Kinlochleven
  • hillwalks in the lower parts of Glencoe and the Ben Nevis Range that do not require any special equipment or knowledge
  • winter climbs that require knowledge and equipment
  • Climbing (obviously depending on conditions)

The ticket cost includes: accomodation, travel, and snacks and drinks for the evenings.
Tickets do not include food on any of the days. The village hall has a fully stocked kitchen and there are places to eat out in Glencoe and the surrounding villages.

We will do an online pre-trip meeting to discuss any questions and talk through the gear list, which you will receive via e-mail closer to the date (before Christmas, if you want to put anything from the list under the tree). This will also be the perfect opportunity to plan any group meals.
