Feshiebridge Winter Trip (Extended)

We are going to... Feshiebridge!

You will be required to have full membership to the club to attend and purchase a ticket for this trip. Details for purchase of tickets through this page will be published in due course, so keep a look out on our Instagram page for updates. It is recommend to purchase a ticket as early as possible as trips tend to sell out fast.

As we are expecting winter conditions, initial release of tickets will only be purchasable for those that are trained in winter skills, tickets may be available to those without closer to the time if it is deemed that winter conditions aren't present. There will be a limited number of places for winter skills training.

We will be making the journey up to Feshiebridge on the Monday afternoon and will likely have staggered leave times for the transport, this will be discussed in the pre-trip meeting.

This is an extended trip, meaning we will be staying at the accommodation for 3 nights.

Please see the advised winter kit list. You will not be permitted on the trip without the necessary essential kit and B1/2/3 rated boots (crampon compatible), crampons, ice axe. The club can't borrow boots as we do not have these to borrow. Ice axe, crampons and helmet (if required) will be included in the ticket price should you wish to borrow them from the club, this will be first ask first serve. Boots/equipment can be rented from Tiso if you do not own them.

Activities

As always, you make your own plans for what you want to do during the stay. However, we will and can support you with tips for route choices and we will of course make our own plans which you will be invited to join!

We will have a limited number of spaces set aside for newcomers to winter mountaineering, where you will have the opportunity to undertake winter skills training under the guidance of Malcolm Airey.

Malcolm Airey, who is the St John Scotland Mountain Safety Instructor with Mountaineering Scotland, will be joining us on this trip to deliver winter skills training. This will include use of ice axe, crampons, ice axe-self arrest, navigation, winter safety, avalanche awareness and emergency procedure amongst other things. There will be 5 spaces available for this on Tuesday (day 1).

This will be the clubs first ever trip to Mill Cottage (Feshiebridge), located not too distant from Aviemore. This provides a base for a winter wonderland of dreams for the mountaineer! Closely located to Cairngorm, Ben Macdui and Bynack More, as well as being very close to Sgor Gaoith and the remainder of the Feshiebridge Munros. We also have access to some more advanced winter mountaineering options too. Plans will be discussed in the pre-trip meeting and throughout the trip. We will of course be subject to the weather in terms of where will give us the best days out.

Accomodation

We are staying at Mill Cottage (one of Sam's favourite places), so bring your own sleeping bag, as we will have alpine style mats to sleep on. As always if you are unsure please contact the committee, we will be covering things in the pre-trip meeting.

Facilities include:

- Sleeping areas on alpine style beds

- Full cooking and dining facilities, including cutlery and utensils

- Communal area complete with fire

- Toilets

- Showers (with heated floor)

- Drying room

We will need to clean the cottage before we leave and we expect everyone to help with this, and in usual GCUMC fashion we aim to leave the place cleaner than we found it.

What to bring

This trip will need the usual stuff for a day on the mountain detailed in the winter kit list. It is imperitive that you read through the list, especially if you are new to winter mountaineering. If you're unsure on what to bring please contact us.

The club is able to provide ice axe, crampons and helmets, but it is preferable that you bring your own if you have them, these will be given out on a first ask first serve basis. If we do not have any more available you will be required to rent them from Tiso (or buy your own) which you should sort BEFORE travelling on this trip. We are not able to provide any boots. You will require crampon rated boots (B1/2/3).

Winter equipment and boots can be rented from Tiso if you do not already own/can't borrow them.

You will not be permitted to take part in any activity without B rated boots, crampons and ice axe.

As this is an extended trip we will be sleeping in the cottage for 3 nights, you will be required to have a sleeping bag (we also have a limited amount to use if you do not have these, you MUST bring your own sleeping bag liner) along with your winter day sack for the trip, prepare for 3 days worth of mountain activity. It is also important that you bring something to eat in the evening, although there are places to eat nearby.

If you wish to loan any club equipment for the trip, please contact the Gear Secretary (Equipment will be loaned out on a first ask, first serve basis).
