Braemar trip

And the first weekend away in TRI B is... Braemar!

You will be required to have full membership to the club to attend and purchase a ticket for this trip. Details for purchase of tickets through this page will be published in due course, so keep a look out on our Instagram page for updates. It is recommend to purchase a ticket as early as possible as weekend meets tend to sell out fast.

As we are expecting winter conditions, tickets should only be purchased if you have received winter skills training. If you are not winter skills trained, but would like to attend, please purchase a training ticket. Sam Trombley will be leading the training.

We will be making the journey up to Braemar on the Friday afternoon/early evening and will likely have staggered leave times for the transport. This will be discussed in the pre-trip meeting, which will be held on 15/02/2026 on Teams.

Please see the advised winter kit list. You will not be permitted on the trip without the necessary essential kit and B1/2/3 rated boots (crampon compatible), crampons, ice axe. The club can't borrow boots as we do not have these to borrow. Ice axe, crampons and helmet (if required) will be included in the ticket price should you wish to borrow them from the club, this will be first come first serve. Boots/equipment can be rented from Tiso if you do not own them.

Activities

As always, you make your own plans for what you want to do during the weekend. However, we will and can support you with tips for route choices and we will of course make our own plans which you will be invited to join!

This trip sees the club travelling to and staying in Braemar which is located in the heart of The Cairngorms. We have a lot of mountains at our disposal, with particular note is the Munros located through Glenshee including the Glas Maol 4 and The Cairnwell 3, there is also good access to Tolmount and Tom Buidhe. Lochnagar is also within reach of Braemar. There is also the option of longer days to the north through the Linn of Dee offering Ben Avon, Beinn Bhreac and also on the south Càrn Bhac to name but a few. Plans will be discussed in the pre-trip meeting and during the weekend. We will of course be subject to the weather and avalanche forecasts in terms of where will give us the best days out.

Accomodation

We are staying at Braemar Village Hall, so bring your own sleeping mat and bag. As always if you are unsure please contact the committee, we will be covering things in the pre-trip meeting.

Facilities include:

-  A large hall which is 19m x 9m and has a wooden floor, this is where we will be sleeping/socialising.

- A small hall which is 5m x 6m, can be used for socialising.

- A kitchen with a cooker, fridge, freezer and basic kitchen equipment.

- There are ladies and gents toilets, which contain showers.

- Metered gas and electricity.

We will need to clean the hall before we leave and we expect everyone to help with this, and in usual GCUMC fashion we aim to leave the place cleaner than we found it.

What to bring

This trip will need the usual stuff for a day on the mountain detailed in the winter kit list. It is imperitive that you read through the list, especially if you are new to winter mountaineering. If you're unsure on what to bring please contact us.

The club is able to provide ice axes, crampons, helmets, head torches and waterproof trousers. It is preferable that you bring your own if you have them, these will be given out on a first come first serve basis. Please get in contact with Rhiainnon to reserve kit.

If we do not have any more available you will be required to rent them from Tiso (or buy your own) which you should sort BEFORE travelling on this trip. We are not able to provide any boots. You will require crampon rated boots (B1/2/3).

Winter equipment and boots can be rented from Tiso if you do not already own/can't borrow them.

You will not be permitted to take part in any activity without B rated boots, crampons and ice axe.

As this is a weekend trip we will be sleeping in the hall for 2 nights, you will be required to have a sleeping bag and sleeping mat (we also have a limited amount to use if you do not have these, first come first serve, and you MUST bring your own sleeping bag liner) along with your winter day sack for the trip, prepare for 2 days worth of mountain activity. It is also important that you bring something to eat in the evening, although there are places to eat nearby.
