An Overview of Public Health Nutrition and Dietetics in the UK

Avril Aslett-Bentley BSc MSc TC PGDipDiet RD RNutr(Public Health) PGCertHE,
Consultant Registered Dietitian & Nutritionist 

Avril Aslett-Bentley is a very experienced dually registered Dieitian and Nutritionist, who has worked across diverse areas and settings of Nutrition & Dietetics in different parts of the UK, including Scotland, as well as having engaged with various types of professional European and global work. Avril was educated at the Universities of Sheffield, London (KCL) and Oxford (St Hilda's College) and what is currently Leeds Beckett University, where as a Senior Lecturer she taught Nutrition and Dietetics for many years, including as Course Leader of the Post Graduate Diploma/MSc Dietetics Course and later the then BSc Human Nutrition course. She was also sequentially a Dietetics Placement Tutor and  Placement Co-ordinator for the Nutrition Students. 

As a Dietetic student Avril trained at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London and after a brief but informative time working across the food industry, took up the post of Lecturer A in Nutrition & Dietetics at Robert Gordon's in Aberdeen and also contributed to a course she contributed  to setting up jointly with the University of Aberdeen for Oil Rig Medics. During this time she jointly ran the Aberdeen BDA Twig, was a Placement Tutor and practiced part time at Aberdeen Infirmary and Woodend Hospital. Avril has worked in the NHS in the past as the Metabolic/Research Dietitian at Leeds General Infirmary and in Community Dietetics posts based in West Yorkshire and East Sussex. She has also worked in corporate Nutrition, private practice and as a freelancer. 

In more recent years her work has focused mainly on Public Health Nutrition & Dietetics. She is a long established member of the British Dietetic Association and the Nutrition Society. For the last few years she has conducted freelance work, as a Consultant Registered Dietitian & Nutritionist with an emphasis on Public Health Nutrition & Dietetics and food sustainability. Over the years she has contributed to various publications, covering both Nutrition & Dietetic aspects and Higher Education Pedagogy. Currently Avril Is the Vice Chair of the BDA Public Health Specialist Group and Co-lead for the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare's Food And Nutrition SusNet.
