Trimester 1 Report 2016/17

Meetings attended / Activities carried out
• Attended the SSCG meeting in October 2016
• Attended three meetings with the GCU London Dean – Antony Morgan to work on a plan that would ensure the January 2016 starter students a summer graduation ceremony in London
• Organized a petition for the relocation of the summer graduation ceremony of 2016 to London (http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/gcu-london-gradceremony?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=share-top-left)
• Attended a meeting with GCU Student President Lauren Ramage, GCU staff Jan Hulme, Antony Morgan and Scarlett Hooper about the GCU London students concerns about the summer graduation ceremony (meeting took place 9th of November)
• Attended three meetings with the MBA and MSc luxury masters course leader Tim Jackson to work on a better plan for the reappointment of the cancelled legal aspects of brand management module (affected courses: MBA and MSc luxury students) (meetings took place in October and November)
• Organized a meet and greet student event in the learning cafe on the 4th of November that enabled students to talk about what they like, what’s going well, and what is going less well and therefore could be improved on campus
• Attended a meeting with the newly appointed research representative Haq Shah to discuss and share our thoughts that we would raise at the London School Board meeting on the 21st of November
• Attended the GCU London Learning, Teaching and Quality Committee meeting on the 22nd of November
• Attended the London School Board meeting on the 7th of December

It is needless to say that in all these meetings, vital points essential to improving the GCU London student learning experience were raised. Some have been acted on while some are in progress at the time of this report.

Some Important Updates
• It is very important to point out that throughout the frequent email exchanges with Lauren Ramage, the petition that raised 55 signatures in total and with the help of GCU London staff we have come much closer to our goal of having a summer graduation ceremony of 2016 in London
• Throughout frequent meetings with Tim Jackson and the class reps and students of the MSc and MBA luxury brand marketing and management classes we have found a solution for the reappointment of the legal aspects of brand management module. Most importantly: all parties are satisfied with the solution
• The major concerns students raised on student events (apart from the relocation of the summer graduation ceremony) is the fact that many highly qualified lecturers have left GCU in the summer of 2016. Other students have also raised concerns about the quality of some lectures and whether the lecturers are really qualified. (e.g.: bad quality of PPT used for the lecture; lecturers being late to their own classes; lecturers cancelling classes
via emails during the night before the lecture)

Ongoing Activities/Future Events
• Organizing a summer graduation ceremony in London 2016
• Attendance to school board meetings
• Aim to help out with the Teaching awards
• Create and support marketing activities to recruit new students
• Organize student events that enable students to talk about their concerns/ what they think could be improved
• Improve student engagement
• Improve student attendance
