STAR Awards 2024 WInners

On Thursday 18th April 2024 we held our annual celebration event. The STAR Awards in the Re:Union Bar and Grill. The STAR Awards recognises the hard work and dedication of GCU Students. The event involved a drinks reception followed by a meal and awards presentation. 

                                           
 

GCU Student of the Year

GCU Student of the Year: Afia Kazmi 

Afia's extensive involvement in extracurricular activiteis has had a profound impact on th lives of the others, both within and outside of GCU. She has helped to facilitate opportunities for students to engage in cultural exchange and intellectual discourse. Their dedication to their roles within GCU has shown Afia's commitment to the univeristy's motto: For The Common Good  

Lindsay Leadership Award: Desmond Wussah

Desmond demonstrated their leadership skills by allowing people to connect, through thier empathy and ability to nurture honesty, openness and active listening. Their ability to communiate in an effective and empathetic way allowed for the students they worked with to create strong bonds and an inclusive and welcoming support network. 


Representation Awards

Academic Rep of the Year: John Olarinde

Students described this year’s winner as someone who went the extra mile in their role to help ensure students had increased access to on campus resources at evenings and weekends. 

Representation Network: Ethnic Diversity Network 

This group has been working continuously from the start of the year to maximise representation of all groups. They worked hard to build a strong and diverse group of people wih a focus on understanding each others cultures. They actively applied student feedback to help improve the student experience. 

Mental Health & Wellbeing Champion: Glasgow Students’ Nightline

The winner has allowed students to have a safe space to talk about anything they need to get off their chest, which is one of the best things you can do to look after your mental wellbeing

Societies Awards

Society of the Year: E-Sports Society

This society was commended for not only their consistent activities and successful large scale event, they also hosted a fundraiser for a childrens charity. Their society member participation has been at an all time high and they have actively encouraged cross university events and created bonds with other Glasgow based societies. 

 

Best New Society: GCU Ukrainian Society

 

GCU Ukrainian Society actively encouraged new members across the university to learn about Ukrainian culture and history by creating events and activities to engage with as many students as possible. They also worked and collaborated with other societies across GCU and Glasgow to help raise awareness and raise money for charity. 

 

Best Society Event: Battle for Glasgow 2023 (E-Sport Society)

The event was the first of its kind that the unieristy had, it was entirely student led and the society not only planned, set up and organised the whole event they also helped to create opportnities for other students to take part and gain new skills. The event promoted cross university participation. 

Best Overall Contribution from a Committee Member: Cara Wilson 

Cara demonstrated great leadership skills, motivation and commitment to increasing membership activity. They also actively motivated and encouraged other members of the society to help plan and participate with inclusive and diverse activities.

Student Media Awards 

Radio Caley

Best Behind the Mic; Ross and Stuart (RNS)

RNS hosted a high quality well reserched and rehered show. Their dedication and chemisty made their show an easy and enjoyable listen, which helped contribute to an increased engagement with Radio Caley. 

Best Overall Contribution: Jay Blakeway

Jay was instrumental to the running of the station this year and went over and above in their role in helping ensure Radio Caley is a wonderful place to volunteer. Jay succeeded in creating a safe space for volunteers and worked to successfully diversify the Radio Station.

Best Article: Dreams 2024 - By Paul Brady

Paul's ability to invite the reader into the vividly imagined space, where the subject matter becomes a lens through which the broader themes of creativity, aspiration and identity are explored. His unique voice created compelling visual storytelling and thought-provoking content. 

Best Overall Contribution: Paul Brady

Paul's ability to blend insightful analysis, consitently delivering content that not only captivates readers, but also significantly enhances the magazine's reputation and readership. Thier dedication has help to contribute to the magazine's wider appeal and contributed to the overall voice of the magazine.
