Hello from the Freshers Team!

For all you eager young freshers out there new to GCU campus, the place can be scary. Never fear, your freshers team is here!

You might have seen the friendly faces of the freshers team walking around campus, identifiable by their navy team hoodies and hopefully beaming smiles. These are the people who welcome you to events and help out, the people who give you goodie bags, the people who beg you to take their flyer. Having all been freshers ourselves we know how daunting it is to arrive at a brand new place where we barely know anyone, and suddenly be expected to join in at a ton of events.

These friendly faces are here for one simple purpose – to help you.

We know how scary freshers can be so we are here to lend a helping hand. If you look slightly lost around campus (don’t worry, I still do and I’m just starting third year) chances are you will find a member of the freshers team who can assist you with whatever it is you need, and can send you off in the right direction. If you are worried about meeting new people or going alone to events, there will always be helpers there to chat to before you do the sometimes dreaded introduction to new people. But no matter how scared you are, you will always find someone to talk to, something fun to do and some free goodies, I promise!

As a little introduction to some of your freshers helpers, I asked them what their favourite memory of freshers was.

For myself, Rachel Watson 3rd year Multimedia Journalism student, I had a slight problem when I came to GCU 2 years ago in the fact that I was still 17. This was before the days of an active wristband to give under 18s something to do, so the only freshers activities I could do were in uni or in Caledonian Court. I was lucky that I lived with a load of 17 year olds, so much so that we outnumbered the over 18s. This meant that we were all in the same boat and were able to do ‘freshers-like activites’ in our halls. These were definitely the highlight for me, getting to know my new flatmates and just having fun with the people I’d be living with for a year.

For Lisa Graham, 4th year Media and Communications student (and Radio Caley’s Head of Programming) her favourite part was the radio station’s acoustic gigs. These gigs are a great place to hear some fantastic live music, meet plenty of new people and see what it’s like as part of the university’s student run radio station. Radio Caley’s annual freshers acoustic gig takes place on Wednesday the 21st September, a change to the freshers timetable, and will feature some fantastic folk and Americana acoustic artists.

Fraser Knight, Multimedia Journalism student who was a fresher last year, said that his favourite thing about freshers was all the new friends that he made within the week. With course inductions going on as well as freshers activities, it really is the perfect time to meet a load of new people who may become your saviour throughout the ups and downs of uni. Like I said, everyone is in the same boat as you, so you’re bound to find some new friends.

So go on young freshers, put yourself out there and talk to new people, try new experiences and just have a fantastic freshers!
