Petition for GCU to revise recent white to recycled paper changes in all Campus printers

by Deleted User 21 November 2016, 12:06

Category: Glasgow Caledonian University

Voting closed

Student Voice approved this Idea with the following Improvement.

It is proposed to ensure that Bright White Recycled paper is available in a selection of printers across campus that students can select to print onto.

At the 28 October 2019 Student Voice, Student Voice voted that this idea should be closed as the university has responded that they are not able to facilitate different paper sources in printers. It was explored with the university if this could be facilitated for a small fee but this is already currently available as Printing on white paper is available from the print services on campus.

As I am sure all students are now aware, the printers available to students across the Campus are stocked with recycled paper as Glasgow Caledonian University seeks to reduce its carbon footprint. Whilst the thinking behind this decision is appreciated, it has in turn created an issue.

As a Class Representative I have had students voice concerns about the new arrangements, those printing C.Vs and assignments which look professional on white paper do not carry the same visual quality on the recycled paper in use at present. This has led to students printing important assignments at home or at external printers off campus with additional cost to students, whilst no saving has been made in terms of the printing cost on the recycled paper.

I have visited the Print Centre on Level 1 of the Saltire Centre like many others to enquire if they are able to print my assignments but there are strict guidelines to which they must adhere.

I therefore propose that Glasgow Caledonian University revise its decision to use recycled paper only in all Campus printers. I believe the students who have raised concerns would be happy to use recycled paper to print off lecture slides or notes, but that it is essential that access to printers with white paper is available for students who do not wish to print C.Vs , cover letters or submit assignments using the recycled paper.

To clarify, it is acknowledged that a meeting took place on Monday 14th November at Student Voice and so far as GCU are concerned, recycled paper is acceptable for any assignments submitted

I propose a solution of re-introducing white paper to a selected percentage of the printers available and advising students of which printers carry white and which carry recycled paper, so that the University continues to lower its carbon footprint and also offer students the option to print on more professional looking paper if they so wish.

Hi, I'm a rep for 3rd year accountancy and I've been asked about getting this provided. Has there been much call for it?

Jill, Evidence of support for this can be found in the Print Centre on Level 1 where there are pages of names and signatures. For many it's not just about assignments but about CVs and cover letters they want to print and send. Someone at the university has read this idea and implemented it providing white paper on the ground floor of the Saltire Centre for April/May 2016.

I'm sure if white paper was needed to print something it could quite easily be placed in the printer at the time of printing. As we knlw there must be 100ks of sheets of paper wasted between all the printing stations within the uni. Not only is this a recycling issue but surely a cost issue. Rather than putting quality white paper in printers students should request X amount of sheets and then load them into the printer. Mind you this in itself could cause issues as not all students would be competent in loading said paper and could lead to damage of paper trays. There must surely be some type of compramise. Maybe somebody could do their disentation on the costs both enviromentaly and financial of paper use within GCU .
