Supporting Student Carers

Vice President of the School of Health and Life Sciences, Jodie Waite, met with MSP Sandra White to ask for her support around the Student Carers work that Jodie is doing with GCU and Carers Trust Scotland.

Students with caring responsibilities are currently an invisible group, as they are not nationally recognised or recorded through HESA, SAAS or UCAS. This means that often Student Carers are not offered the correct support from Higher Education Institutions because their numbers are unknown, making Student Carers in Scotland four times more likely to drop out of university. Sandra White agreed that she would assist in any work around Student Carers that is undertaken, and suggested a debate on these issues at Scottish Parliament in June.
