In partnership with the Students’ Association, Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) is working to develop equality for its sportsmen and women with the presentation of new awards to its talented athletes.

Craig Gorrie has been named Sportsman of the Year 2016. Craig plays for the Scottish Universities and the Scottish National wheelchair basketball teams, and won silver at the British University Championships.

Chloe Lambert is Sportswoman of the Year 2016. This year she has won the 200m bronze medal at the British Universities Championships and 200m Gold at the Scottish Universities Indoor Championship, as well as 200m Gold at the Scottish Senior Championships.

Their prize money and the new Sportswoman of the Year trophy were donated to the GCU Students’ Association by President of the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council, Paul Morron.

Mr Morron said: “I have always been by impressed by GCU’s widening access record and was delighted to be able to support its talented athletes. Chloe and Craig personify not just sporting success but are both high calibre people. It’s a wonderful achievement to be selected from all of the University’s athletes and I hope the awards will help these two deserving winners fulfil their potential and continue to enjoy their sports.”

GCU’s Talented Athletes Programme, in partnership with Glasgow University and Strathclyde University, with support from donors, helps athletes develop their potential during their studies. In addition to financial assistance to help with training and competition, the programme offers students access to a physiotherapist, sports masseur, nutritionist, coach, and training facilities.

Neil Alexander, Full Time Officer at GCU Students’ Association, said: “GCU Students’ Association is delighted to be working in partnership with the GCU Foundation and Paul Morron in developing our sports awards for GCU students.

“Our new trophies place gender equality at the heart of our sporting achievements. Equality is fundamental to the Students’ Association and the Common Good and we are pleased to see this reflected in the recognition of the outstanding efforts of our students. We would like to thank Mr Morron for his generous support of this development and look forward to celebrating sporting achievements by GCU students in the future.”
