Scottish student sport

Yesterday (Wednesday 16th March) will forever go down as a great day for GCU sport as the #blueandwhitearmy had a lot to celebrate with success coming across a number of areas.

Netball and Women's Basketball took the trip to the east side by hitting Dundee as part of Scottish Student Sports Conference Cup Finals Day.

After long campaigns for both teams, the breakdown of these journeys can be found in previous articles, both teams were hoping to hit the road back to Glasgow with Gold medals in hand and the gaining the perfect way to finish their seasons.

Netball were first to take to the court and were high in confidence after an unbeaten league season. The club got off to a slow start with several mistakes giving Edinburgh a chance to end the first half 1 point up at 25-24.

The 3rd quarter followed the same end to end partner but GCU started to wrestle the innitative and found themselves starting to pull away before dominating the final quarter and coming out as the Conference Cup Champions, defeating Edinburgh 56-46.

Following this game at 4pm came our Women's Basketball team who were set to renew their rivalary with Strathclyde.

Again, GCU got off to a slow start and ended the first quarter 19-10 down with Strathclyde extending that lead in Q2 and ending the first half on top at 32-16. GCU started to come back in to the game in the second half but ultimately left themselves too much work to do and ended the game 11 points behind with the scores being 57-46 but still picking up a silver medal after a fantastic cup run for the ladies.

Yesterday also saw the exhibition entry of cross country running in the 2016 Glasgow Taxis Cup, only to see GCU Athletics Club crowned the cross country running CHAMPIONS!

The team went and stole the competition, with GCU athletes Madeline Robinson, Anna Tait and Emma Dunnett coming 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the women's race. While in the men's race GCU athletes Callum Matthews and Michael Houston took 1st and 3rd!

Snowsports also kicked off their Glasgow Taxis Cup competition yesterday at Bearsden. GCU racked up some imprssive results but ultimately struggled due to only taking part in half of the events.

A fantastic day for sport at GCU and one that all our athletes can take pride in as we head in to the main Glasgow Taxis Cup week!
