Society Spotlight: ESN

Name: Daniel

Society: ESN President

1) Why did you get involved in societies?

I got involved with Erasmus Student Network as I decided to stay in Glasgow rather than go for an exchange. The idea was to meet international students that might need some help to get themselves comfortable in the new environment. As I believed I could be more helpful than Scottish students since I’m personally International student that is doing a full degree programme here at GCU. From my experience, I was able to organise social events that helped our exchange students get to know the culture and social life of Scotland.

2) What does your society get up to?

As the society we are aiming to help in-coming exchange students adopt to the new life situation - it is being away from home. We are also trying to become a part of their life thus, they are able to ask us for any help regarding different aspects of life in Glasgow as well as some academic help. Most exchange students do not speak fluent English or feel uncomfortable while speaking English. We are trying to help them interact with local students from different societies on our weekly events. Therefore, their language skills improve rapidly over their stay in the UK. Moreover, as we are part of the biggest international student association in the world, we are closely co-operating with other local sections from Strathclyde and Glasgow University. On our events they get the chance to meet people from all over the world that are currently in the same life situation. From the point of view of Scottish person, we give a chance to meet people from future exchange destinations but also, local students get a chance to improve their 2nd language. This is not all that we offer, but to find out, you should come and join us on our event!

3) What’s the biggest benefit from being in a society?

As a member of the society we offer exceptional travel opportunities around the UK and Europe. In our opinion, the biggest advantage is building the cultural awareness within our members. We do not discriminate anyone; everybody is more than welcome to be a part of Erasmus. Some people believe it is European society, which in fact is not necessarily true! Currently we are having people from all over the world sitting the committee chairs and also members that are from Australia, Canada, USA, Brazil etc. The real mixture! As a local student, we give you an opportunity to sit the chair on our board. Erasmus provide numerous positions and projects that each section ought to conduct. The members of the committee get even more opportunities to explore the world as we are often invited for European conferences, National and International Platforms etc. Join us to find out more! Every month there is a conference or event that our section is invited to, and hardly ever we have to pay for them!

4) If you could have any celebrity join your society who would it be and why?

If we could have a celebrity joining our society, we would defo vote for Beyoncé. Who doesn’t like her?! Also, she indicates to healthy balance between work and life. This is what we are trying to do within our social group. We like to party hard but also we put strong emphasis on our university coursework!

5) If your society had to be a sandwich filling, would it be a BLT, roasted-red-pepper hummus or cheese and pickle?

We will definitely be roasted-red-pepper hummus! Most of our society members trying to stay fit, often vegetarians. As hummus is in a way indicator of healthy life, this is also what we are trying to do within our circle. Moreover, it is tasty! Who doesn’t like to be tasty?!
