Massive Cup Wednesday for GCU Sides

Wednesday 24-02-2016 - 11:11

After 5 months of hard work, today sees 3 of our teams just a few steps away from crowning their seasons with silverware.

By the end of today we will know if GCU will be represented at Cup Finals Day in Dundee on the 16th March and whether one of our teams will have taken another step towards Sheffield for the Big BUCS Wednesday on the same day!

Women's Basketball

Their Cup Journey

Last 16: BYE

Quarter Finals: Beat Edinburgh Napier 56 - 39

Semi Finals: Glasgow 2nd's - 17:00 start

The Women's Basketball team have had a mixed season with an impressive cup run, highlighted by beating undefeated league leaders Edinburgh Napier, being offset by a low key league campaign. The ladies will be looking to put in an impressive performance against Glasgow 2nd's at Smithycroft, the scene of their victory over Napier, to secure their place at Cup Finals Day in Dundee in 3 weeks time.

Men's Basketball

Their Cup Journey

Last 32: BYE

Last 16: Beat Aberdeen 108 - 34

Quarter Finals: Beat Abertay 44 - 41

Semi Finals: Edinburgh 2nd's - 14.15 start

The Men's journey has been a little longer than the ladies but, non the less, just as impressive. The gents also started with a bye but then posted an impressive result against Aberdeen with the men recording their only 100+ points game this season to progress to the quarter finals. Abertay proved to be a much tougher opposition with the game going down to the wire but the men held their nerve and held off their opposition to set up a tough tie with Edinburgh 2n'd at the Emirates Arena.

Women's Volleyball

Their Cup Journey

Last 32: Beat Aston 3 - 0

Last 16: Beat Liverpool 3 - 0

Quarter Finals: Northumbria 2nd's - 15:30 start

The Women's Volleyball team have taken roads never before taken by a GCU team this year, and not just by progressing to the last 8 of the BUCS Trophy for the first time. The ladies have, literally, have the longest cup run as their first game took them on a 600 mile round trip to Aston University in Birmingham. With this being the first English opposition the team had faced, the ladies were unsure what to expect but ran out dominate winners of their midlands counter parts setting themselves up for another way tie in England. The ladies travelled to Liverpool this time expecting a tougher opposition but travelled the 450 mile round trip in confidence of extending their cup run further. The ladies put on another impressive performance by dominating their Merseyside oppostion 3-0 to set up a tough Quarter Final against Northumbria 2nd's.

After traveling over 1000 miles so far in the competition, the team were relieved to finally have a game on home soil against arguably the toughest team in the competition. Northumbria 2nd's have had an impressive season domintating their league winning 9 from 9, all with a scoreline of 3 sets to nil. This will be a tough tie for GCU but after coming this far the team will be confident of going all the way.
